Who’s ready to make the cross over border for the Fall Pumpkin mini quilt? Well, let’s get started!
Here is the drawing:
You will need dark brown (Br), light brown (LB) and Tan (T). All measurements are in inches.
Measurements for X blocks:
- Br-1: 5 1/4 x 1 1/4 (cut 21)
- LB-1: 5 1/4 x 1 1/4 (cut 21)
- T-1: 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 (cut 21)
Measurements for stripe blocks:
- Br-2: 3 1/2 x 1 (cut 24)
- LB-2: 3 1/2 x 1 (cut 24)
- T-2: 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 (cut 24)
A short cut for making the stripe blocks is to cut long strips of all three colors by their widths: Br x 1″, LB x 1″ and T x 2 1/2″. Once the strips are sewn together then cut into the 3 1/2″ length. This is the method I used.
Start with the X blocks:
Step 1: On the wrong side of T-1 draw a diagonal line in the center lining up with the opposite corners. Cut in the opposite direction.
Step 2: Center the T-1 triangle on LB-1. Sew right sides together. Open and press.
Step 3: Line up the other T-1 triangle on the other side of LB-1. The center markings should line up. Sew right sides together.
Step 4: Open and press.
Step 5 Step 6 Step 7
Step 5: Cut block diagonally across the sewn pieces.
Step 6: Sew Br-1 right sides together to both sides of T-1/ LB-1 block.
(Sorry I didn’t get a picture of that, but I’m pretty sure you understand what that looks like.)
Step 7: Open, press and square up to a 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 block.
Make 9 blocks using LB-1 first and 12 blocks using Br-1 first in Step 2.
Make the Stripe block:
Step 8 Step 9
Step 8: Sew a light brown and a dark brown strip to the sides of the tan strip.
Step 9: Cut strip into 3 1/2″ blocks.
My strips were around 17″ so I got 4 blocks out of each strip. The length of your strip will determine how many you can get out of it. I made 6 of these strips to get my 24 blocks.
That wasn’t so bad, was it? You should end up with 12 X blocks with light brown on top, 24 striped blocks and 9 X blocks with dark brown on top.
