Something many of you may not know about me is that I am currently on the woman’s ministry board here at Camp Humphreys. It’s called Protestant Women of the Chapel, or PWOC, for short. I have the fun position, Vice President: Programs. That means I get to plan the programs, which are like a single day women’s retreats. I’ve done five so far and I have two more to go before I hand the job over to someone new before we leave South Korea and move to the Netherlands.
By joining the board last Spring I met Julie. She’s a super sweet young lady and she just had a baby girl, Elsie May. Since Miss Elsie May is a February baby I thought it was fitting that she get a Valentine’s Day quilt.
I started off by gathering a lot of pink and aqua fabrics. I cut a total of 80 squares at 5 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches. 40 from various pinks and 40 from various aquas.
Next I cut 160 white squares at 2 3/4 inches. These were for the corner triangles. I wanted the color part of the block to be a bit chunky so by making the white pieces exactly half the width of the color pieces they would be less than half once all the seams were done around the outside. I hope I explained that well enough.
The white squares were sewn in opposite corners and leaving a 1/4 inch on the outside of the seam the extra white and color were cut off. Then the white was opened up and ironed.
Once all 80 squares were made I arranged them on the floor. I tried my best to keep squares of the same pattern separated.
Once I had the squares arranged how I liked them, I sewed the X and O sets into blocks.
The blocks seemed a bit squished together so I added white boarders. I cut strips 2 1/2 inches wide so that there would be a 2 inch finished strip separating the blocks. I like how that looks so much more.
I somehow managed to rotate my upper right X. I didn’t notice until it was too late, but now the words on the block are upside down. Nobody tell Julie, okay? Maybe she won’t notice.
Next came the quilting of the layers and adding a boarder.
And there you have it! Elsie May’s Hugs and Kisses quilt.
A few more shots for good measure.
The finished quilt ended up measuring around 50 x 60 inches, which is super funny because judging by the height of her momma, this baby blanket will fit her well into adulthood.

Beautiful. You are so talented! So exciting that you, Ben and kids get to be a part of so many different countries and cultures. Can’t wait to see whenever you do move to the Netherlands how you decorate your new home too as you are also a talented decorator.

Hi Cynthia, Thanks for your question. I’m sorry, I don’t have a pattern, but I can give you the fabric requirements! The cut measurements and pictures in the post is all that’s needed for assembling the quilt top. For the fabric you will need either a fat quarter or 1/3 yard from a bolt for each of the 8 pinks and 8 teals. A half yard of white. 1 1/2 yards for the backing and 1/2 yard for the binding. If you have any questions that come up about the assembly please just send me another message. Happy sewing!

I love the way this quilt is made but I want smaller blocks. How would I do the dimensions. This is the first time to piece one like this.
Trisha Ann says
Hi, This one is really easy to resize. Just choose the size of the base block and make the white squares half the length and height. With this quilt the colored fabric was a 5 1/2 inch square, this made the white pieces 2 3/4. These dimensions make a 5 inch finished block. So, if you wanted a 4 in finished block start with a piece of colored fabric at 4 1/2 inches and make the white ones 2 1/4. Hope that helps!

Thank you. That is a big help.
